Perinatal mental health difficulties including:
Challenges affecting children and families including:
Sometimes pregnancy, birth and the newborn period are more challenging than expected. Many parents expect to feel happy and excited during these times but sometimes the experience of different emotions such as frustration or sadness may concern parents.
In addition, parents may be concerned about bonding with their baby once they are born or there may be specific challenges in the newborn period, including breastfeeding difficulties, managing crying or sleep challenges.
Parenting is the toughest job in the world with the least amount of training!
It can be understandably upsetting for parents to witness their child experience distress.
I believe parents require the necessary support to, in turn, support their children. I have extensive training in various parenting approaches. In my experience providing support to parents can be crucial in creating sustained and meaningful change for their children.
I work with children and families who have experienced bereavement, or perhaps are coming to term with illnesses within the family. Children can struggle to understand such complex issues and parents can find it difficult to know how to explain such things.
I ensure I support families to explore these issues in a safe and compassionate environment. It is important parents are given sufficient support to, in turn, support their children during such conversations.
Sometimes family life becomes particularly challenging. Even within the most loving and well-meaning families, communication difficulties can arise and arguments at home become very common, which is understandably distressing for everyone. I support family members to develop ways of understanding each other's perspective and create more effective patterns of communication.
I draw on systemic theories and therefore acknowledge difficulties someone is experiencing don’t exist in isolation. I consider how a young person’s environment (e.g. school) may contribute to the difficulties they are facing.
I am able to work more widely with networks involved in a child's life to consider how they can be best supported by all involved.
